An evaluation of physical and mechanical scarification methods on seed germination of Vachellia macracantha (Humb. & Bonpl. ex Willd.) Seigler & Ebinger Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Maldonado-Arciniegas,Francisco; Rúales,Carlos; Caviedes,Mario; Ramírez,Darío X; León-Reyes,Antonio.
Abstract The dry Andean forests are ecosystems with a high diversity of flora and fauna and are at high risk of extinction due to the pressure of human activity. V. macracantha is a native species of the dry Andean forest, which has potential for reforestation and also provides benefits in agroforestry systems, due to its nitrogen fixation capacity, the supply of organic matter, the production of shade and wind protection. The multiplication of this species is limited due to the low percentage of seed germination, which present dormancy. The aim of this research was to determine the most effective scarification method for seeds germination of V. macracantha. Two types of methods were tested, the immersion in strong acids (chemical scarification), and the...

Burial depths favor Italian ryegrass persistence in the soil seed bank Scientia Agricola
Cechin,Joanei; Schmitz,Maicon Fernando; Hencks,Jonas Rodrigo; Vargas,Andres Antonio Monge; Agostinetto,Dirceu; Vargas,Leandro.
ABSTRACT: Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is a weed broadly found in fields cultivated with wheat and barley crops. Seed inputs into the soil before harvesting winter crops increase seed bank, ensuring survival. This study evaluated the persistence of Italian ryegrass seeds subjected to burial depths over time. Experiments were carried out in the field for two years in randomized block experimental design with four repetitions. Dormant seeds harvested from mother-plants were put in nylon bags containing soil. Previously, seed viability was evaluated in a 1 % tetrazolium solution, and 50 viable seeds by repetition were buried at 0.5, 5.0, 10, and 20 cm depths. Seed persistence was evaluated by the percentage of deteriorated and remaining seeds,...

Desiccation, postharvest maturity and seed aging of tall oat-grass PAB
Stanisavljević,Rade; Djokić,Dragoslav; Milenković,Jasmina; Terzić,Dragan; Djukanović,Lana; Stevović,Vladeta; Dodig,Dejan.
The objectives of this work were to determine whether and at which seed physiological maturity stage the diquat desiccant affects the tall oat-grass (Arrhenatherum elatius) seed quality and yield, as well as the proper storage period between harvest and sowing. Diquat desiccation was evaluated in applications during milk or dough seed maturation stages. Seeds conventionally produced and stored under traditional storage conditions were used for the analyses. Seed samples were drawn every 30th day after harvest (DAH). After the 240th DAH, samples were drawn every 90th day up the to 690th DAH. The highest yield were obtained by desiccation applied at the beginning of the seed dough stage, with a satisfactory seed quality. Both final germination and seedling...

Detection of QTLs for traits associated with pre-harvest sprouting resistance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) OAK
Cao, Liangzi; Hayashi, Kazuki; Tokui, Mayumi; Mori, Masahiko; Miura, Hideho; Onishi, Kazumitsu.
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) is one of the serious problems for wheat production, especially in rainy regions. Although seed dormancy is the most critical trait for PHS resistance, the control of heading time should also be considered to prevent seed maturation during unfavorable conditions. In addition, awning is known to enhance water absorption by the spike, causing PHS. In this study, we conducted QTL analysis for three PHS resistant related traits, seed dormancy, heading time and awn length, by using recombinant inbred lines from 'Zenkouji-komugi' (high PHS resistance) x 'Chinese Spring' (weak PHS resistance). QTLs for seed dormancy were detected on chromosomes 1B (QDor-1B) and 4A (QDor-4A), in addition to a QTL on chromosome 3A, which was recently...

Disturbance as a factor in breaking dormancy and enhancing invasiveness of African grasses in a Neotropical Savanna Acta Botanica
Gorgone-Barbosa,Elizabeth; Pivello,Vânia R.; Baeza,M. Jaime; Fidelis,Alessandra.
The Cerrado is threatened by wildfires and invasive species. We aimed to evaluate in laboratory conditions whether temperature fluctuation at the soil surface, resulting from the absence of vegetation due to fire, can affect the germination of Urochloa decumbens and U. brizantha, two invasive African grasses. Seeds of both species were submitted to simulations: 1) temperature during fire at 1cm belowground (F); 2) temperature fluctuation at 1cm belowground without vegetation cover for a month (TF); 3) (F) + (TF); 4) control at 25ºC. After treatments, seeds were put to germinate at 25ºC for 40 days. We had four replicates per treatment and three temporal replicates. We compared germination percentage and the mean germination time among treatments using...

Effect of Scarification, Self-Inhibition, and Sowing Depth on Seed Germination of Lupinus campestris Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Gutiérrez Nava,Pedro; De León González,Fernando; Etchevers Barra,Jorge; Casas Fernández,Alejandro.
Lupinus campestris Schltdl. & Cham. grows in shallow fields and disturbed areas of Central Mexico. It has potential to improve soil fertility and as fodder. Seeds of L. campestris show dormancy, and the technology needed to increase its potential use requires information about conditions favouring seed germination. The aim of this study was to evaluate the seed germination responseof L. campestris under controlled (laboratory) and natural field conditions. Under laboratory conditions, 2 yr old seeds had a maximum germination percentage (50%) when they were scarified with sulphuric acid for 90 min prior to sowing and when laboratory light (0.5 µmol m-2 s-1) was maintained during the diurnal period. Without scarification, only about 3% of the seeds...

Evolution of Ryegrass Seed Banks Depending on Soil Tillage and Crops Planta Daninha
Galvan,J.; Rizzardi,M.A.; Peruzzo,S.T.; Ovejero,R.F..
The seed bank is characterized by the amount of seeds and other viable reproductive structures in the soil and it is changed by the input and output of seeds, being classified by its permanence in the soil as transient or permanent. The tillage and crops used decisively influence this dynamic and more disturbed areas tend to have richer seed banks. The purpose of this study was to test different soil tillage and crop systems, aiming to reduce or eliminate the ryegrass in the area. The experiment was conducted from 2010 to 2012. In the first year, the effect of chemical tillage was assessed, compared to the area without tillage. From the second year on, in the area that received chemical tillage, the second experiment was installed, where it was assessed...

Lin,Yu; Liu,Shihang; Liu,Yaxi; Liu,Yujiao; Chen,Guoyue; Xu,Jie; Deng,Mei; Jiang,Qiantao; Wei,Yuming; Lu,Yanli; Zheng,Youliang.
Abstract Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) is a major abiotic factor affecting grain weight and quality, and is caused by an early break in seed dormancy. Association mapping (AM) is used to detect correlations between phenotypes and genotypes based on linkage disequilibrium (LD) in wheat breeding programs. We evaluated seed dormancy in 80 Chinese wheat founder parents in five environments and performed a genome-wide association study using 6,057 markers, including 93 simple sequence repeat (SSR), 1,472 diversity array technology (DArT), and 4,492 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. The general linear model (GLM) and the mixed linear model (MLM) were used in this study, and two significant markers (tPt-7980 and wPt-6457) were identified. Both markers...

Germination of native grasses with potential application in the recovery of degraded areas in Quadrilátero Ferrífero, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Figueiredo,Maurílio Assis; Baêta,Hudson Eustáquio; Kozovits,Alessandra Rodrigues.
Native grasses are potential species to be used in land rehabilitation. However, due to the lack of better knowledge of their performance, preference is given to exotic plants, which may be invasive and negatively affect the local biodiversity. In order to better understand the propagation of native species of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero (Minas Gerais, Brazil) using their seeds, and in so doing, indicate possible candidates for land rehabilitation, this study investigated the germination patterns of the following grasses: Andropogon bicornis L.; Andropogon leucostachyus Kunth; Setaria parviflora (Poir.) Kerguélen; Cenchrus brownii Roem. & Schult; Echinolaena inflexa (Poir.) Chase, and Apochloa euprepes (Renvoize) Zuloaga & Morrone. The...

Propagation of Annonaceous plants Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Ferreira,Gisela; De-La-Cruz-Chacón,Iván; Boaro,Carmen Silvia Fernandes; Baron,Daniel; Lemos,Eurico Eduardo Pinto de.
Abstract This review aims to present advances in studies on the propagation of the Annonaceae species, which includes species of economic importance such as: soursop, custard apple, atemoya and cherimoya. In sexual propagation, advances are mainly related to a better understanding of the stages of seed development, dormancy mechanisms, and germination. In asexual propagation, compatibility studies between grafts and rootstocks are presented, focusing on the expression of genes involved in tissue formation. The cutting method is also discussed, which is another option for the propagation for this group of plants considered difficult to root, approaching endogenous and exogenous factors related to the subject, as well as management strategies that affect...

Seed dormancy release and germination characteristics of Corispermum lehmannianum Bunge, an endemic species in the Gurbantunggut desert of China Phyton
Zhang,LW; Liu,HL; Zhang,DY; Bian,WG.
Seed dormancy release and germination of Corispermum lehmannianum Bunge were tested using various treatments: temperature, cold stratification, gibberelins (GA3), dry storage and sand burial. Results showed that temperature and light did not affect the germination of fresh seeds, cold stratification and GA3 could improve seed germination, whereas dry storage and sand burial did not. The germination percentage was highest at 35/20 °C after the cold stratification and GA3 treatments. Corispermum lehmannianum seeds were classified as non-deep, Type-2, physiological dormancy (PD), whose seed dormancy could be released by cold stratification and GA3.

Seed germination and seedling vigour of italian ryegrass, cocksfoot and timothy following harvest and storage Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Stanisavljevic,Rade; Ðjokic,Dragoslav; Milenkovic,Jasmina; Ðukanovic,Lana; Stevovic,Vladeta; Simic,Aleksandar; Dodig,Dejan.
During post-harvest maturation, different species vary in the length of dormancy breaking or germination increases. Seed dormancy and slow seedling development often limit establishment of forage grass stands. Seed germination and seedling vigour of Italian ryegrass (Lolium italicum A. Braun, Synonym Lolium multiflorum L.), cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.) and timothy (Phleum pretense L.) were observed after harvest and storage. After harvest in June, seeds were stored under standard storage conditions and sampled every 30 days after harvest (DAH), up to 270 DAH, and then every 60 days up to 990 DAH. At each date, seeds were tested for final germination percentage and for seedling vigour traits. Timothy seeds had a maximum germination (88%) and the best...

Seed longevity of red rice ecotypes buried in soil Planta Daninha
Noldin,J.A.; Chandler,J.M.; McCauley,G.N..
Red rice is a troublesome weed in irrigated rice production and is spread through contaminated commercial rice seed and machinery. Seed dormancy is a major trait for red rice. Studies were carried out at two locations to determine red rice seed longevity in the soil of several ecotypes from four US states. Five months after burial near Beaumont, Texas only three ecotypes had viable seed (<1%) when buried at 5 cm, but 9 ecotypes had viable seed after two years when buried at 25 cm. At the thirty-sixth month after burial, ecotypes Arkansas 2, Louisiana 2 and 4, Mississippi 4 and Texas 1 had viable seeds, but at less than 1%. Freshly harvested red rice seeds buried at 12 cm near College Station, TX, survived longer than seeds placed on the soil surface....

Tropical seed species' responses to liquid nitrogen exposure Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Salomão,Antonieta Nassif.
The ability to tolerate ultra-low temperature (-196 ºC) exposure was evaluated in 66 tropical orthodox seed species of 21 botanical families from the Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) and Atlantic Forest Brazilian biomes. Liquid nitrogen had no effect on the germinability of 51 seed species. The stimulatory effect of cryogenic temperature on germinability, with or without subsequent chemical scarification, was observed in nine seed species with deep physical dormancy, or heterogeneous levels of seed hardness, or with no dormancy. Significant reduction in germinability occurred in six seed species, presumably because of factors acting individually or in combination on these seeds, such as inappropriate moisture content, or the potentially detrimental effect of...
